Tired of hearing your child’s school day was “fine”? Change the question! What was the funniest thing that happened today? What did you learn at school today that you think I don’t know?

Set a regular family meal time and make it a priority in your day. Show your children that meals are an important family time by turning off the TV and not answering the phone during meals. Enjoy conversation. Include all members of the family and try to avoid nagging and complaining so it is simply quality time.

When studying, focus on self-quizzing rather than merely re-reading material. Quizzing shows a student what material he has down pat, and which areas require more study. Help your child try different learning techniques to find those that suit him. Flashcards are a good way to review facts and figures. Turn key concepts and terms into mnemonics for quick retrieval.

To help your child stay on top of what he’s learned in class – and avoid needing to relearn large amounts of material for a test – have him set aside a specific time each day to review his notes. This should be an opportunity to fill in sentence fragments, clarify points, or add memory-jogging associations. Or he may want to rewrite messy notes into a format he likes better, such as an outline. The act of rewriting notes also helps the student learn the information.

Knowing where and when you study best is as important as the studying itself. Do you need total quiet, or do you need stimuli? If silence works, get earplugs, and find a place to study with minimum distractions – away from siblings, TV, and other noise. Shut off your phone and the Internet so you are not tempted. If you do better with some background music and stimulus, put on a soft CD, preferably something without lyrics that may distract you.
